How to change all instances of a colour in a picture to a different colour?

i have a white Hare on a black background. i want to change ALL of the black into grey, or even better delete/ make it transparent (like in a PNG). So the white hare remains. How to change all instances of a colour in a picture to a different colour?I use Gimp, which is good freeware. Use the colour select tool to select the black. Make sure that your picture has an Alpha channel, by right clicking the layer and then %26quot;add alpha channel%26quot;.

Then all you have to do is clear the selection and save it as a PNG. The only problem may be in areas around the Hare that are a bit grey or blackish. They may not get selected and you will have to play around with settings and possibly the eraser.
